Social Construct is a bold entertainment production company dedicated to curating a range of socially relevant and impactful projects, from award-winning films to episodic television. With a focus on IP development, packaging and sales, the company’s projects have been acquired by top studios and distributors worldwide, including Universal, Lionsgate, Netflix, HBO, Showtime, IFC, Amazon Studios, etc, as well as boasting laurels from the International Emmy Awards, Sundance, SXSW, Hotdocs, IDFA, and more.

Founder & Producer

Zak Kilberg

Producer Zak Kilberg launched Social Construct, LLC in 2010, in order to seek out the most artistically original, yet commercially viable projects in the world. Over the past several years, Kilberg has been primarily focused on IP acquisition and development financing for a variety of new projects and ventures, including Convergent Media, LLC.

Projects from Social Construct and their various joint ventures include: Prisoner 760, based on the New York Times Bestseller Guantanamo Diary, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Jodie Foster, and Shailene Woodley, from Oscar-winning director Kevin MacDonald, distributed by STXFilms; a slate of animated musicals with Gaumont Studios and John Legend’s production company Get Lifted; the screen adaptation of upcoming Penguin Random House memoir The Other Dr. Gilmer with producer Jonathan King / Concordia Studio;  the New York Times’ “Best Book of the Year” Say Her Name adaptation, with producer William Horberg and the Oscar-winning company Fabula Films; International Emmy-winning documentary Bellingcat:Truth In A Post-Truth World; and many others. Kilberg is also developing a slate of branded TV series projects with a variety of producing partners, including Tim Kring (Heroes), Bruce Cohen (Pushing Daisies), Escape Artists (Equalizer franchise), and Bad Robot (Westworld).

Kilberg is the founder/CEO of Social Construct, which he runs with his partner Iz Web, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, NC.

Fun facts: Zak used to write and perform hip hop music, and once opened for KRS-One with his “Conjuring Evolution” project.

Head of Development, Partner

Iz Web

A prolific writer since childhood, Iz Web was the Poet Laureate of her graduating class, and in 1995 she received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature specializing in Fiction into Film, a minor in Filmmaking, and intensive studies in the disciplines of Art, Philosophy, Comparative Religions and Mythology. She wrote, produced, and directed several independent films, and also worked in various aspects of both production and distribution, before moving away from the film industry to pursue a career as a multimedia artist and circus performer. She has written a book, interactive story-based games, short stories and poems, screenplays, and scripts for the stage. In 2013, she joined Social Construct to lead a collaborative writer’s group, and is now a partner, serving as the Head of Development.

Fun Facts: Iz enjoyed a brief former career as a circus Ringmistress and performance artist, and nowadays dedicates her practically non-existent spare time to multimedia art projects like the Return of Free Water project, and writing. Iz is always within a few feet of her notebook.

Connect Beyond Festival provides attendees with access and communication by using music, film, and storytelling to create connections. More than just an event, Connect Beyond Festival is a movement to develop a network of people inspired by creative mediums and united in the pursuit of equality and social justice, with a goal of inspiring a sense of community and personal engagement.

Convergent Media was conceived by Social Construct and prominent entertainment law firm SmithDehn LLP. Our mission is to explore socially relevant and meaningful themes, and to bring engaging, entertaining stories to audiences worldwide, while aspiring to commercial success for independent filmmakers and investors alike. Our films include Buena Vista Social Club: Adios (“New York Times Critic’s Pick”), Prisoner 760 (with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jodie Foster), and Say Her Name.
