‘Omoiyari’ is a Japanese word that means to have sympathy and compassion towards another person, and is also the story of a musician’s journey to better understand himself and his surrounding world by examining Japanese incarceration and other relevant historical events through a musical lens. The film follows Kishi Bashi as he travels, composes, and improvises music at different locations around the globe in search of answers. The film explores key past and present social issues that surround these events, and blurs the line between filmmaker and songwriter. Omoiyari is a genre-breaking, artistic exploration that fuses history, art, and the complexities of the human condition.
World premiere March 2022 at the SXSW Film Festival.
“Though it powerfully deals with the dark side of American history, Omoiyari is his most accessible work to date”
